The special event industry is made out to be a glamourous lifestyle full of parties but event rental and event venues know that there are times it can be nothing like what outsiders expect. An overlooked and often forgotten drawback is the amount of cleaning and maintenance that needs to go into rental inventory and event venue products to ensure they meet stringent customer needs. One of the worst things to clean on anything – Red Wine. Makes me cringe just thinking about staining something with it. But it is for that very reason that I decided it was time to stain a vinyl Chiavari cushion with the stain of death and then attempt to clean it. Here’s how it all went down.

1. I poured (while cringing) remnants of a red wine bottle onto a white vinyl Chiavari cushion.

2. I then let the wine stay on the cushion for 2 hours

3. I wiped the wine off the cushion and proceeded to let it sit untreated for 2 days

4. I took a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser damp with water to the cushion – this seemed to get the darker small stains out but the larger stains lasting yellow marks on the vinyl.

5. I decided to try another step and gather the following materials: a clean white rag, bleach and the stained cushion

6. I made a solution of ½ cup of bleach with 2 cups of filtered water and put the rag in it to soak

7. Once the rag was fully soaked I wrung it out so it was still wet but not dripping and lay it on the stained vinyl for 1 hr.

8. DING! Once the hour was up I took off the rag, wiped the cushion down and it looked as good as new

Party Rental Companies and Banquet Halls often buy more than one colour of fabric chiavari chair cushion so that their customers have different options for their events. What is so great about chiavari chair cushions is the ability for companies to take them off the foam cushion and clean the exterior cover. We’ve heard from some customers that while taking off the cover can be easy, putting the cover back on the cushion is a whole other story. 3. Wrap foam cushion in plastic wrap

Where the plastic wrap really shines is after the cushion is in the cover. It is much, much easier to adjust the cover so that the seams and sides line up where they’re supposed to than on a plain foam cushion. The foam grabs the fabric too much without the aid of the plastic wrap.

We recently had a customer ask us a question that we hadn’t been asked before and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to figure out the answer. Ivory tablecloths either to use in a restaurant, hotel or banquet hall, or rent out to customers, inevitably will face staining of all sorts. While optimally the best time to deal with a stain is as soon as it has happened, the odds of that happening are extremely slim. Restaurants, hotels and banquet halls can’t yank the tablecloth off the table until the cheque is settled or the event is complete, and party rental companies often don’t receive their linen rentals back until the following day of the special event. Our customer asked “can ivory tablecloths be bleached?” and so we sought to find out whether they can be.

Step 1:

Red wine is spilled on the tablecloth (what a waste of red wine!)

Step 2:

Red wine stain is left overnight to re-create a possible customer scenario

Step 3:

Put ivory tablecloth in washing machine. I have a washing machine with a built-in bleach dispenser so detergent was added to built-in detergent dispenser and 1/3 cup bleach was added to the built-in bleach dispenser. Setting was set to hot water. If you don’t have a built-in bleach dispenser machines, pour the bleach directly into the wash water after the wash cycle has begun but before adding your clothes. This will ensure the bleach is evenly dispersed through the water and not just onto the tablecloth in spots.
