2014 Bar Trends

Being officially in the last quarter of the year, I thought now would be a good time to reflect on the trends we've been seeing in the 2013 season and present some of my thoughts towards what we at National Event Supply see for the 2014 bar season

2013: The year of the variety, glassware & bottled cocktails

This year has brought about some exciting trends. We’ve seen a greater variety of beer being sampled with pale ales and lagers no longer being the staple beverage of choice – making way for wheat beers, fruit ales and much more. Along with the greater variety being sampled, we’ve seen a greater reliance on glassware. Beer glasses have seen a huge comeback-no longer can a beer be sampled in a singular glass but more and more bars/restaurants are taking a hint from European establishments and serving beer in properly branded and stylized beer glass.

Beer Glasses

On the cocktail front there’s been a trend towards making the traditional cocktails such as cosmopolitans, margaritas and mojitos, available in bottles for personal consumption instead of having to hit a bar to get a delectable drink in a 7oz martini glass.

2014: The year of sparkling bubbly, innovative cocktails and the continuance of craft beer

Over the course of 2013, there`s been a large amount of sparkling wines that have popped onto the beverage scene – perfect for our Serenity Crystal Champagne Flute. Locally produced sparkling wines seem to be popular as well and are taking the place of normal table wines, or its counterpart Champagne as a toasting beverage.

Cookie CocktailsInnovative cocktails continue with dessert cocktails making their way to the scene. Without having to imbibe in their higher calorie counterparts, tasters can whet their sweet tooth with dessert cocktails such as Lemon Cream Pie Martini’s, Tiramisu cocktails or Strawberry shortcake.

Craft beers should continue to pick up steam with the “shop local” trend continuing to be a main food trend. With thousands of breweries across the country, and new brew master’s opening doors every day, this spells a plethora of different styles to sample. In Ontario, the LCBO does a great job of highlighting the different craft beers available for Ontarian’s – often showcasing different breweries across Canada both in-store, in advertising and in their fabulous Food & Drink magazine.

Got a trend you think will be big through the start or all of 2014? Let us know in the comments!

Back to School-Training Tables

The year continues to fly by; it seems like July was just yesterday but it’s already the middle of August. The days are getting shorter and cooler, but there’s still a lot of fun to be had on patios and on decks across the nation. Soon though, students will be heading back to school to start a new year of learning.

Life is a series of teachable moments.

Hold my BeerOf course, learning doesn’t just have to happen in a school. Any room can be a classroom, if there is a desire to learn. Sometimes learning starts with the phrase, "Here, hold my beer and watch this," and sometimes it is a little more formal. To help facilitate more formal learning, National Event Supply offers our NES Reliable Plastic Folding Training Tables and our NES Wood Folding Training Table. Both of these tables are perfect for temporary or permanent classroom settings, featuring reduced widths, sturdy construction, and easy set-up. If you’re interested in facilitating more informal learning, National Event Supply offers beer glasses in our Eclisse Line.

Interested in a Wood Training Tables?

NES Wood Training Tables are 96 inches (8-feet) long, 18 inches wide, and 29.5 inches tall. They’re made of ¾ inch plywood that is 13 layers thick and has been clear-coated. They also feature grey, powder-coated legs and support rails that are bolted through the tabletop for additional strength. We currently stock these tables with black PVC vinyl edging, but they are also available on a special-order basis with aluminum bull-nosed edging. They are currently available in our Toronto warehouse and are part of our buy 10 get 1 free promotion.

Have you thought about Plastic Training Tables?

NES Rectangular Plastic Folding Training TablesNES Reliable Plastic Folding Training Tables are 71 inches long, 19.5 inches wide, and 29.25 inches tall. Being just under 6-feet long, they are perfect for narrower rooms, and feature an additional 1.5 inches for people using the table. They also feature grey powder-coated legs and have an off-white plastic top like our NES Reliable Round Folding Tables and our NES Reliable Rectangular Folding Tables. Unlike our plastic folding tables and our wood folding tables, they have a perfectly smooth top that is ideal for writing or drawing on. They are currently available in our Toronto warehouse and are also part of our buy 10 get 1 free promotion.

If you’re interested in our Wood Folding Training Tables or our Plastic Folding Training Tables (or our Eclisse Beer Glasses), why not drop one of our sales reps a line to get your custom quote including shipping? They’d also be happy to answer any questions that you may have!

Choosing Wine Glasses for Your Rental Business

When men drink, then they are rich and successful and win lawsuits and are happy and help their friends. Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever.
Aristophanes c. 450 - 385 B.C., Knights [424 B.C.], l. 92.

Serenity 16oz Wine GlassUnfortunately, there’s no beaker of wine available at 9am on a Wednesday morning to help me say something clever, so I hope you don’t mind a lack of wit. If you’re thinking about adding wineglasses to your inventory it is important to think about how they will be used, whether they’ll be used for casual or formal events, and what is expected in red and white wine glasses.

White Wines, Red Wines, and Sparkling Wines

When you decide that you want to/need to start renting wine glasses, it’s important to budget for two different sizes of wine glasses. Smaller wine glasses are perfect for white wines as you don’t want the wine to warm up before it is drunk. Red wine glasses tend to be larger in size as the taste of red wine improves as it aerates.

If your rental customers are in the mood to celebrate, they may also be interested in Champagne Flutes. Champagne flutes are designed for sparkling wines or wines that are carbonated. Their shape keeps the wine bubbly longer, and improves the taste of the wine. If your customers are looking to celebrate their event with Champagne, they’re going to want a Champagne flute.

How Big of a Wine Glass do I Need?

How Big is Too BigThe size of the wine glass required is dependent on the type of wine being served and the type of event the wine is being served at. As I mentioned earlier white wine glasses are typically smaller than red wine glasses, but the type of event can also make an impact on the size of wine glass that your customers may want. For instance, if you’re serving wine at a cocktail-type event, you’ll typically want a 4oz pour. If you’re serving wine during dinner, a 6oz pour is more desirable.

Wine should not be poured to the rim. Wine always tastes better when it has room to breathe. For a white wine, you want to fill the wine glass until it is 1/3 to 1/2 full. If you’re pouring 4-6oz of white wine in a glass, that means that your white wine glass should be 8oz to 16oz in size. For red wines, you really don’t want to fill the glass beyond 1/3 full. With red wines, bigger glasses are always better. Again, with a 4-6oz pour of wine, you’re looking at wine glasses that are 12oz to 22oz.

Crystal or Glass

Crystal wine glasses are the more elegant choice and perfect for formal events. Crystal stemware tends to be thinner and have a greater clarity than glass stemware allowing for greater appreciation of the wine inside. Their relative lightness when compared to glass stemware provides a more delicate touch, and can also improve the wine drinking experience.

If you focus more on casual events, you’ll appreciate a sturdier wineglass. Outdoor events or bbqs are the perfect venues for glass stemware. While they do not have the clarity of a crystal wine glass, good glass stemware can add a touch of class to any event. Glass stemware’s durability also lends itself to reduced breakage.

Toaster jesus

Here’s a Toast to Wine!

At the end of the day, purchasing wine glasses can come down to what you think your customers are looking for. From a price perspective, glass stemware is typically cheaper than its crystal counterpart. If your customers are price sensitive, it may make more sense to go with glass. If you deal with a more high-end clientele, they may be willing and expecting to pay more for crystal. National Event Supply has both crystal stemware and glass stemware available at attractive prices. In addition, there is no minimum order so if you need to replace a glass or two down the road, you won’t need to buy more than you need.

If you’d like to learn more about our crystal or glass wine glasses, please don’t hesitate to send us a note!

Summertime on the Patio—Beers, Bistro Chairs, and BBQing

It’s hard to believe that July is almost over. It seems like just yesterday that we were bundling up against the cold and using road salt for something other than showing how strong our wood and plastic tables are. While July may be gone, there is still a month of summer left. There is still a month of sitting on the patio at your favourite pub, bar, bistro, or restaurant, drinking cold beer and enjoying the dying sunlight at the end of a long day. Yes, my friends, August is still to come! And if you’ve been dealing with rain, or other inclement weather, there is still a chance to make your patio a glorious destination for those who seek nothing more than to savour every moment of a fleeting summer.

Back in Stock: Bistro Chairs

NES Reliable White Bistro ChairIt always seems that we’re short an item as summer hits its stride and this year is no exception. After a bit of a slow start, we managed to completely sell out of our White Bistro Chairs. When we realised we were going to run out of the perfect chair for patios and outdoor events, we got on the horn and ordered a container to be shipped to us tout suite! And make no mistake; they are the perfect chair for the patio. They’re incredibly comfortable and incredibly strong, perfect for lazy days tipping back a few brews. Unlike patio chairs that you can pick up at any big box store, these chairs won’t buckle or collapse when a larger customer takes a seat. And with their curved and textured seat, your customers can sit in comfort while they peruse your menus. Our NES Reliable Bistro Chairs come in black or white and ship from our Toronto Warehouse. They are priced at $19.95/ea and go down in price with volume.

Beer Glasses

If you’re in the rental business, it can be tough to find beer glasses that have attractive prices and don’t require beer goggles to get past the ugly. Luckily, National Event Supply has you covered. In our Eclisse line we have two different sizes of Beer Glass that would be perfect for any event that you may be hosting. Our 12oz Beer Glass is almost 7 inches tall with a nice thick base to prevent tipping. We also have a 14oz Beer Glass that has a bit of a stem and a bowl a bit like a wineglass. One might call it chalice shaped if one were a bit pretentious. Our 12oz Beer Glasses are $1.75/ea and our 14oz Beer Glasses are $1.85/ea.

Ribs are Nice, Steak with all the Fixin’s is Nicer

In a previous blog article, Jonathan showed off his barbequing prowess with some gorgeous BBQ Ribs. When he showed me the pictures of those succulent ribs with that spicy sauce sizzling over a low fire, the sugars carmelizing… I wanted them. It didn’t matter that it was 9am—those ribs looked like a little piece of heaven.

Steak and all The Fixin'sI went home and thought about it and decided that I needed to see if I could surpass his barbequing skills. Behold the fruits of my labour! Beautiful, thick rib-eye steaks; twice baked potatoes overloaded with cheese, chives, and goodness; and some fresh corn, grilled to enhance its flavour. This glorious meal was served on our Angelika Dinnerware, and was followed by a tangy key-lime pie.

Enjoy Summer, My Friends!

It may be hot. It may be sticky. Highways may be crammed with cars and constantly being repaired. But in 6 months when winter has taken hold of the country and the Christmas decorations are being put away for another year, you’ll miss summer. You’ll miss laughing with friends on the patio; drinking ice-cold margaritas on hot, humid days; and the feeling you get when the sun beats down on your face. Enjoy summer, my friends. And if you need some bistro chairs for your patio, or beer glasses for an event, don’t hesitate to drop us a note.
